Most power in Greenport restored after truck crashes into pole on Front Street
Most Greenport Village residents have regained power as of noon Monday after a driver attempting to light a cigarette became distracted and crashed his pick-up truck into a utility pole on Sunday, Southold Police said.
According to police, Juan Arroyo, 50, of Greenport, was driving east on Front Street at around 4:20 p.m. on Sunday when he lost control of his 2007 Ford truck just west of 6th Street. In addition to hitting the utility pole, which had a transformer attached to it, Mr. Arroyo also hit a street sign.
No injuries were reported and no charges were made, police said.
Village Mayor David Nyce said most residents have regained power, but a few homes that were connected to the transformer remain without power. Village workers are in the process of replacing the utility pole, which should be completed within the next day, he said.
In an separate crash on Front Street Sunday, an 18-year-old from Garden City was arrested for DWI after his car overturned on Front Street in Greenport on New Year’s morning.
Michael Gambardella said he fell asleep before his car struck a tree and a sign post just west of the Greenport business district just after 8 a.m., according to police reports.
Greeenport Fire Department Rescue Squad took Mr. Gambardella to Eastern Long Island Hospital for a check-up, after which he was taken to headquarters, processed, and released on his own recognizance after an afternoon arraignment.
