Janet Luft Knight

Janet Luft Knight of Southold died Jan. 3, 2012, at San Simeon by the Sound nursing home in Greenport. She was 80 years old.

Born Aug. 14, 1931, to Joseph and Helen (Beiren) Luft, she married Harold Edwin Holm Knight Jr., known as “Chip,” on Feb. 16, 1953, in West Haven, Conn.

Formerly of Garden City, she and her husband moved to the North Fork 35 years ago. They were members of the Garden City Community Club and North Fork Country Club and were communicants of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church.

Janet’s husband of 58 years survives her. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War and later became vice president and secretary of the Brooklyn Union Gas Company. He was also a member of the Estate Property Owners of Garden City, past-president of the Brooklyn Council of Boy Scouts of America and a longstanding member of North Fork Country Club.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Jan. 11, from 3 to 6 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where religious services will be conducted at 3:15 p.m. by Father Thomas Murray. Interment will take place Thursday, Jan. 12, at St. Lawrence Cemetery in West Haven, Conn.
