Mattituck-Laurel: ‘Preschool Preview’ at library Jan. 19

It seems winter has finally arrived and with it the January cold and wind we never seem to get used to. Why not warm up a bit by attending a fundraiser Friday evening, Jan. 20, to support Relay for Life? The event, hosted by Bedell Cellars, starts at 7 p.m. and will include music, wine and light fare. Only 125 advance tickets will be sold for $40 each. You can get yours at Suffolk County National Bank in Cutchogue or by calling 734-5050.

If you have little ones at home and are thinking about where they should attend preschool, don’t miss the “preschool preview” at Mattituck-Laurel Library tonight, Jan. 19, at 6:30 p.m. Representatives from local preschools will be on hand to discuss their philosophies, goals and objectives. No registration is required and child care will be available.

To help offset the cost of an educational trip to Costa Rica this spring, students sold raffle tickets during December. The winners were Scott Osler, Barbara Jean Smith, S. Becker, Greg Volpe, Gail Angell, Lisa Hinsch, Tony Piraino, Kelly Toole, Pete McGreevy, Laura Koster, Bev Cierac, Agnes Schuller, Tom Zellner, Pat Arslanian, Cutchogue Fire Department, Joe Pozzalano and Dawn Saxtein. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to the students for their ongoing support.

Congratulations to Nicole Krupski for winning the $1,000 Walter Krupski Business Scholarship from the Rotary Club. The award will assist Nicole with the cost of attending Bryant University in Rhode Island, where she is a freshman. Nicole’s parents are Maryann and Gene Krupski, who were extremely grateful for the club’s acknowledgement and support.

Belated birthday wishes go this week to Marcos Perivolaris, who cut his cake Jan. 7.

In the midst of winter, there’s nothing better than a good book. Bev Wowak has announced that the library’s winter reading club, “Take the Chill Off with a Good Book,” begins Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 10 a.m. Drop by, sign up and pick up a good read.

The library will also hold a book discussion Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. on “Winter’s Bone” by Daniel Woodrell and a mystery book discussion “Started Early, Took My Dog” by Kate Atkinson on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 4 p.m.

An important reminder that John Halligan will present “Ryan’s Story” at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, at Mattituck High School. All East End high school students will hear Mr. Halligan speak on Jan. 30 and 31, so this program for parents will be a great way to begin or continue a dinner table discussion about bullying, cyber bullying, teen suicide and depression. The parent presentation is not appropriate for young children. Several Mattituck faculty and staff members who have seen “Ryan’s Story” recommend it for all parents and community members. This event is sponsored by the North Fork high schools, Southold Town Youth Bureau and the Mattituck-Cutchogue PTSA. Be informed and keep our children safe!
