Salvatore M. Catapano Sr.

Salvatore M. Catapano Sr. of Southold died at his home on Jan. 1, 2012. He was 82 years old.

He was born in Hicksville on May 28, 1920, to Michele and Caroline (Avino) Catapano. He attended school in Westbury and married Jeanne Bierling in Bethpage on June 22, 1950. Together they lived in Nassau County until moving to the North Fork in 1986.

For the past 25 years, he had been a commercial grower and the owner of Catapano Farms in Southold.

Surviving are his wife, Jeanne Catapano; four children, Michele I. Catapano of Southold, Dr. Michael Catapano (Karen) of Cutchogue, Salvatore M. Catapano Jr. (the late Geri) of Southold and Neal D. Catapano (Dorothy) of Southold; a brother, Gaetano Catapano of North Babylon, and a sister, Annie Alexio of Bethpage; 13 grandchildren: William S., Michael J., Dina, Peter, Erick, Jonathan, Daniel, Brianne, Salvatore M. III, Aileen, Steven, Susan and Michael; and four great-grandchildren: William, Amaya, Cameron and Michael Jr. He was predeceased by brothers Anielo and Michael Catapano.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Jan. 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday, Jan. 4, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 5, at 10 a.m. The Rev. Don Loper will officiate. Interment will be private.
