Boys Basketball: Wilcenski rejoins Southold team

GARRET MEADE FILE PHOTO | Southold senior Winston Wilcenski has returned to the First Settlers' basketball team.

Winston Wilcenski has been reinstated to the Southold boys basketball team.

The senior guard and the team went their separate ways following Southold’s 56-50 loss to Greenport on Jan. 24. “He’s no longer with us,” Southold coach Jeff Ellis said afterward. Ellis declined to get into specifics about the situation at the time, calling Wilcenski’s separation from the team “an internal matter.”

In a stunning turnaround, Southold athletic director Joseph Braico said Wilcenski had rejoined the team on Wednesday. “He is back with the team,” Braico told The Suffolk Times Wednesday afternoon. “The matter has been taken care of. We are going to move forward.” He declined further comment.

Southold coach Jeff Ellis could not be immediately reached for comment.

Wilcenski has missed the past four games, which saw the First Settlers go 1-3. Southold’s record is 4-9, 4-5 in Suffolk County League VIII, where it sits tied with Bridgehampton (4-9, 4-5) for fourth place. Southold’s next game will be Friday at The Stony Brook School.

Wilcenski, a talented player best known as a pure scorer, also has fine passing skills. He is Southold’s best player. Ellis has called him one of the best players in the county.
