Barbara Haurus

Barbara Haurus, a lifelong Cutchogue resident, died at San Simeon by the Sound nursing home in Greenport on February 14, 2012. She was 82 years old.

Barbara was born at Greenport Hospital on January 20, 1929. Her mom was a housewife and her dad ran the Tydol Gas Station on the corner of Moore’s Lane and Main Road, across from the North Fork Country Club. An interesting piece of trivia: Barbara’s mom was the first female caddie at the North Fork Country Club, and many a day you could find Barbara caddying for a foursome at the country club.

She attended elementary school in Cutchogue and took accounting and business management courses while at Mattituck High School; her favorite subject was always math.

Behind her dad’s gas station in Cutchogue there lived a boy who stole Barbara’s heart, though in the early years they used to fight all the time. Barbara once remarked, “I loved my husband since I was 8 years old.” Every day she used to wait for him to get off the bus from school.

Barbara and John were married in 1945 when he returned home from serving his country during World War II. They were blessed with a boy, David, and a girl, Hope. Barbara’s son lived with her in Cutchogue, and her daughter lives in upstate New York. She was also blessed with three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Her love of math led her to a position in bookkeeping in the mortgage department at North Fork Bank, where she worked for 21 years. Her mathematical skills also elevated her to the position of Branch Manager at Suffolk County National Bank in Cutchogue, where she worked for 15 years. Barbara had fond memories of working with various branch managers and attending the opening of new branches of SCNB. Due to an injury sustained as the result of a fall, Barbara retired from banking in 1993.

Barbara and John traveled extensively during their years of marriage and visited many countries in Europe, as well as Hawaii and the Caribbean. Her favorite memories were of their boating days as they traveled with friends across Long Island Sound to Connecticut and Rhode Island, with excursions to Montauk as well.

She was most proud of her accomplishments in the banking industry with a long, successful career in management. She had started as a cashier at the local IGA and rose to the position of Branch Manager at SCNB.

The family received friends February 17 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated later that morning at Our Lady of Ostrabrama Roman Catholic Church by Father Marian Bicz. Interment was at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery.
