Students at Oysterponds School gathered in the school gym Monday to audition for their performance of “The Wiz of the West” this weekend.

The intensive week of theater is part of an effort by the administration to “bring theater back to Oysterponds,” according to PTA co-president Kathy Kelley Syron. Vice president Lynette Crowley said teachers couldn’t remember the last time a production was put on by the students, and so the PTA researched companies that could aid in the play’s production. In the end, The Missoula Children’s Theatre to was chosen to come to Oysterponds and prepare the students for the big day.

The Missoula Children’s Theatre is a company of play directors based in Montana that travel the country teaching kids at schools and camps how to shine on stage in a one-week period.

Oysterponds School students will perform “The Wiz of the West” at Greenport High School this Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m., according to principal Francoise Wittenburg.

She said she welcomed the theater company because of the impact dramatic and fine arts can have on young minds.
