North Fork business students take high honors
DECA clubs from Mattituck and Southold high schools put in a good showing at the annual New York State DECA competition in business and marketing in Rochester earlier this month.
DECA is an international business and marketing club for high school students.
Ten students from Mattituck attended and came home with six finalist medals and three third-place trophies.
Finalist medals went to Mattituck students Rebecca Caracciolo and Abigail Terry in broadcast advertising, Kaitlyn Doorhy in public service broadcast advertising, Nick Tesiny and Andre Vega in free enterprise economics and Brette Rosen in public speaking prepared speech.
Rebecca Caracciolo, Nick Tesiny and Brette Rosen each also took third place in their respective competitions, along with Shannon Sheridan-Chiaro in decision making-marketing, Elizabeth Wilcenski in principles of finance and Daniel Baird and Graham Homan in buying and merchandising team decision making.
Southold sent 20 students and the winners include Sean O’Donnell, who took a first-place award for wholesale selling. Coming in second, Mackenzie Feeley won for marketing math, Preston Jolliver for prepared public speaking, Frank Cone for extemporaneous public speaking and Hannah Matthaei for decision making-human resources.
Finishing in the top 10 were Southold students Griffin Quist for extemporaneous public speaking, William Fujita for job interview, Preston Jolliver for prepared public speaking, Jessica Rizzo for marketing decision making and Sam Kortchmar for financial analysis.
Anne Davey won the outstanding DECA member award.
Greenport High School, which just started its DECA program last year, did not send a team to the state championship. Even so, the school won an award for increased participation, according to club adviser Martha Tuthill.
