Marguerite Kingsbury

Marguerite Kingsbury, known as Peggy, died March 21 at Eastern Long Island Hospital. She was 73 and had resided at Peconic Landing in Greenport for seven years.

She was born July 4, 1938, in German-occupied Vienna to Mildred (Gleason) and Howard MacPherson and grew up all over the world. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hunter College in New York City and married James Kingsbury on Sept. 30, 1961.

Following the births of her three children, she earned a master’s degree in urban affairs and policy analysis from the New School in New York City and worked as deputy director of the city’s Office of Management and Budget under Mayor Ed Koch. She later ran her own conference planning firm, earned a master’s degree in social work from Smith College in Northampton, Mass., and was a social worker for five years in Pittsfield, Mass.

Family members said she was a natural at being in charge and enjoyed painting, reading and spending time them.

Ms. Kingsbury is survived by her husband, of Greenport; her children, Anne Andrews of San Jose, Calif., Heather Hill of Barrington, Ill., and James Jr., of San Francisco; her siblings, Hugh MacPherson and Anne Lindgren; and five grandchildren.

A service took place March 25 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greenport, the Rev. William Godfrey officiating. Arrangements were handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.
