Southold police are investigating four separate fires set on village properties April 7.

Greenport Fire Chief Wayde Manwaring said two fires broke out in garbage cans at Mitchell Park and mini brush fires sparked at the skatepark and in the woods off Webb Street near the Cablevision tower.

No injuries were reported.

Chief Manwaring said the fires occurred within 30 to 45 minutes of each other last Saturday afternoon and each was extinguished within 10 minutes.

“They weren’t anything serious,” he said. “The police are taking care of it now and they’ll eventually catch the people [that set those fires].”

Southold police officials said Tuesday afternoon no arrests have been made.

Mayor Nyce said the village is working with the police department and local school districts to inform local youths about the dangers of setting fires.

“With it being as dry as it has been, there was an extreme potential for disaster,” Mr. Nyce said. “This isn’t anything people should be playing around with.”
