Cops: Greenport man with history of arrests broke into Floyd Memorial Library

A Greenport man with a long rap sheet was arrested shortly after midnight Tuesday after he was observed breaking into the Floyd Memorial Library, Southold Town Police said.

After an anonymous caller alerted police to the break-in, they say they found Paul Mittleman, 48, in the basement of the library. Mr. Mittleman cut his hand breaking a basement window to gain entry, police said. He was treated for his injuries at Eastern Long Island Hospital.

Mr. Mittleman was charged with criminal mischief and criminal trespassing and held overnight for a Tuesday morning arraignment, police said.

This is not Mr. Mittleman’s first run-in with the law. He was arrested in 2010 for stealing a $400 sander from Riverhead Building Supply. In another incident later that year, he pleaded guilty to criminal possession of stolen property, DWI and leaving the scene of an accident, and was sentenced to more than eight months jail time.
