Town Hall Notes: Town Board says no to bike-a-thon
The Town Board said no Tuesday to giving Bicycle Shows USA access to town roads for two events planned for this summer.
Speaking during the morning work session, Police Chief Martin Flatley told the board he’s concerned over the safety of participants and motorists because participation in a bicycle event could swell to as many as 1,000 riders.
Chief Flatley added he isn’t a fan of one of the events called “Night Ride,” which was scheduled to take place
on Sept. 29 at 11:59 p.m.
“I don’t think it’s safe for people to be riding around in the dark that late at night,” he said.
During its regular meeting Tuesday night, the board unanimously voted down the Night Ride event.
The board tabled a separate resolution on another event, the North Fork Century Bike Ride, scheduled to take place on Aug. 26 at 7 a.m. as a fundraiser for the Greenport Fire Department.
The bike-a-thon was canceled last year due to Tropical Storm Irene, town officials said.
TOWN SEEKS BIZ LIAISON
The Town Board is seeking a business liaison to help improve relations between the town and merchants.
The volunteer position was recommended by the town’s economic development committee. The committee said it believes a liaison will help mitigate problems business owners have within the town and help promote economic growth.
The committee also presented a survey it developed that aims at improving communication between the town and store owners.
Committee member Amy Burns-MacGuire said the survey will help the town to meet the needs of local businesses.
“We want to see that they are happy here,” Ms. Burns-MacGuire said.
The committee is expected to publish the survey online and submit it to the local chamber of commerces and other business groups.
