Main Road bowling alley to be named All Star Lanes

Bowl 58 is no more.

The new name of the soon-to-open bowling alley on Riverhead is All Star Lanes, according to signs placed outside the Main Road site this week, which also announces it will be open this summer.

The project had been named Bowl 58 by its prior owners, Joe Albanese and Robert Bunt, dispite the fact that it’s address is actually 96 Main Road, because they had previously sought a site on Route 58 for the project.

It’s new owners, a group headed by developer Jeffrey Rimland and called “Main Road Holdings LLC,” announced plans earlier this year to complete the 28-lane bowling alley, which was started by Mr. Albanese’s group in 2007 but never finished.

“The building has basically been shelved and has been an eyesore for the past two years,” Mr. Rimland said at a Riverhead Town Industrial Development Agency hearing in January. “I would like to finish construction and begin operating the bowling center as it was intended originally.”

He said the project would have about 50 full- and part-time employees and an annual payroll of about $1 million.

The facility will feature a bowling alley, arcade and sports bar.

Despite objections from the Riverhead school board president, Mr. Rimland’s group in February received partial property tax abatements on the project from the IDA, which  gave a 50 percent abatement in year one,  with the amount of the abatement decreasing each year and ending after seven years.

Mr. Albanese and Mr. Bunt first began plans for the bowling alley on the six-acre site of an abandoned Chevy dealer in 2007 and quickly received town approval and began construction before running into financial problems around 2009.

With much of the building up already, work came to a halt in 2010 when a number of contractors on the project filed lawsuits claiming they had not been paid, and The Bank of Smithtown foreclosed on the property.

In 2011, a group headed by current owner Mr. Rimland purchased the loan from Bank of Smithtown (which became People’s United Bank) and began steps to acquire the property itself and complete the bowling alley.

Town records indicate that Main Road Holdings now owns the property.
