Clarice Dobbs

Clarice Dobbs died May 2 at Peconic Landing in Greenport, where she had resided for four years. She was 92.

Born in Mississippi Oct. 5, 1919, to Henry and Hattie Leggette, she attended both elementary and high school in Mound Bayou, Miss. After earning a B.S. in nursing from DePaul University in Chicago, she got a job at a nursing home, where she met Guy Dobbs Jr., who worked there as an administrator and whose mother owned the facility. They were married in 1946.

Ms. Dobbs worked for over 40 years as a surgical nurse at the University of Chicago Medical Center. She moved to Greenport 11 years ago to live with her daughter and son-in-law, and moved to Peconic Landing when her health declined.

According to family members, helping people was her calling and she was devoted to a life of service. They said she worked tirelessly as a volunteer in her church’s program to help unwed mothers improve their lives, and always took care of friends and relatives.

Predeceased by her husband, Ms. Dobbs is survived by her daughter, Sabrina, of Greenport, and her sister, Lerline Moore. She was also predeceased by 11 siblings.

A service will take place Saturday, May 12, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greenport, the Rev. Garret Johnson officiating. Arrangements were handled by Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.
