Update: Cops say driver was on drugs when car struck tree

The driver of a silver Chevy sedan that struck a tree on Route 48 Monday morning was driving under the influence of drugs, Southold Town Police said.

Edward Marlatt, 60, of Mattituck was headed westbound in Cutchogue when his car struck the tree just before 9 a.m. Monday after he veered across the a grass median and the eastbound lanes of traffic, police said.

Mr. Marlatt, who was traveling alone, was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for injuries he sustained in the crash, police said.

The Mattituck resident was charged with DWI drugs, issued an appearance ticket and will be arraigned at a later date.
