COLLEGE BASEBALL: Palermo earns first team honor Former Riverhead High School player and current St. Lawrence University (N.Y.) sophomore Bryan Palermo of Jamesport was named a first team All-Liberty League second baseman for the second straight year. He led the league in runs scored, plate appearances, at-bats and was tied for third in hits.

Palermo batted .362 as St. Lawrence’s leadoff hitter and had 20 runs driven in. He led the Saints in steals with 14 and struck out only 10 times in 177 at-bats. He formed an effective double-play combination with shortstop Ethan Braddock.

Palermo ranked fifth in the nation in Division III in runs per game and seventh in the nation in runs scored. The team was seventh in the country in double plays turned. Palermo was in on 32 of them from second base.

Palermo helped lead the Saints to their most wins in a season (28) in school history as well as the team’s first first-place Liberty League finish.

Steve Ascher of Mattituck, a freshman pitcher for Oneonta State, started seven of the eight games he played in this season. He had 32 strikeouts in 44 innings, allowed 54 hits, and had a 3.27 earned run average for the Red Dragons (18-21).

BOYS TENNIS: Ross ousts Tuckers A Suffolk County Team Tournament outbracket match between the League VII champion, The Ross School, and League VIII champion Mattituck underscored the difference between the two leagues.

Mattituck suffered its only loss of the year as Ross cruised to a 6-1 win last Wednesday on its indoor clay courts in East Hampton. The following day the ninth-seeded Cosmos lost a first-round match to No. 8 Harborfields, 5-2.

The only individual match that Mattituck (12-1) won last Wednesday came in second singles, thanks to Parker Tuthill’s 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 defeat of Ben Okin.

Ross (12-5) took the other three singles matches through Felipe Reis, Jack Brinkley-Cook and Jonas Linmman. Reis and Linmman both coasted to 6-0, 6-0 results against Garrett Malave and Thomas Chatin, respectively. Jack Brinkley-Cook prevailed at third singles in a super tiebreaker, topping Andrew Young, 7-5, 4-6, 10-6.

All three doubles contests were decided in two sets. The first doubles team of Harrison Rowen and Pedro Zagury was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Stefan Keuhn and Austin Tuthill. Louis Cailoa and Pascal Drummer defeated their second-doubles opponents, Graham Homan and James Rabkevich, 6-0, 6-2. At third doubles, Mike Petersen and Jordan Schimmer beat Dan Salace and Kevin Schwartz, 6-1, 6-1.

“Obviously, they have a very good team, a very deep team, and having a facility like that is a tremendous advantage,” Mattituck coach Mike Huey said. “We played them about as tough as we could play them.”

Malave (13-3), Parker Tuthill (13-2), Young (12-1) and the doubles team of Keuhn and Austin Tuthill (12-2) finished the season with impressive records.

The Tuckers will lose four seniors from this year’s team. Homan, Keuhn and Austin Tuthill — who were regulars in the lineup — have played their last match for Mattituck along with Matt Jacobs.
