Albert Cohen

Albert Cohen of Southold died at his home on June 2, 2012. He was 86 years old.

He was born in Queens, N.Y., on March 3, 1926, to Norman and Lillian Cohen and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had been stationed in the Pacific (Japan, Philippines and Guam).

Educated in accounting at Long Island University, he operated Norman & Sons in Bellerose for 40 years.

Formerly of Glen Cove and Great Neck, where he lived from 1935 until 1983, he had been a resident of Southold for the last 30 years. He and his wife, Rita, were the operators of Hedges Bed & Breakfast in Southold.

For many years, Al ran Island Harvest and he was an ardent supporter of animal shelters and rescuing dogs.

He is survived by his wife, Rita (née Jacobson); four children, Dr. Lawrence Cohen of Richmond, Va., Dr. Andrew Cohen of Greenlawn, N.Y., Joanne Franzel of New York City and Susan Costello of San Francisco, Calif.; siblings Henry Cohen and Mabel Katz, both of Sarasota, Fla.; and two grandchildren, David Franzel and Jonathan Franzel.

Funeral services were held on June 4, 2012, at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold by Rabbi Rachel Wiesenberg. Interment was at the Presbyterian Cemetery in Southold.
