Car smashes into the back of Riverhead store

A car crashed into the back of a vacant furniture store next to the rear entrance of Hy Ting Restaurant on West Main Street sometime overnight Saturday morning, but when the crash occurred and what caused it remain a mystery.

Stephen Wirth, who owns the nearby Digger’s restaurant, says his employees didn’t notice anything when they left at about 2 a.m. and he only noticed the debris and a hole in the building at about 7 a.m. Saturday.

There were small pieces of a car scattered through the parking lot near the rear entrance to the Chinese restaurant, but no car.

A red fence in back of the restaurant was smashed, and metal pole that was cemented in the ground bent over. The back part of the cement building also had a hole in it, presumably where the car hit.

Police weren’t called to the scene until later Saturday morning, but had no additional information on the crash.
ken Loo, one of Hy Ting’s owners, could not be reached for comment.

Building owner Charles Marks was inspecting the damage Saturday morning but declined comment.
