Lawrence Francis Loesch

Lawrence Francis Loesch, 87, of Jamesport, N.Y., died Tuesday, June 12, 2012.

Lawrence — also known as Dad, Pops, The Big Bear, Grandpa, and GG Pa — was a beloved father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend when he was summoned to Heaven. He was born in Bronx, N.Y., on October 2, 1924, to Marion (Runey) and Frederick Loesch. Larry is one of five brothers and is survived by his brother Everett. He was happily married to the love of his life, Dolores, and with his passing, they were together again to celebrate their 66th wedding anniversary on June 15 in Heaven. He was the loving father to Patricia Vierling, Diane Otto (deceased), Lawrence, Christine Innes, James, Joyce Bright, Dolores, and John (deceased); the cherished grandfather of 24; and the adored great-grandfather of 17.

Pops was a decorated, proud World War II veteran. He spent his time fishing and building and flying model airplanes and, with his Mr. Fix-It mindset, was well-known for his ability to repair anything. His family was always his top priority. At times, he showed us the meaning of tough love, but it was immediately followed with his “Big Bear” hug, a kiss and his telling you how much he loved you.

He charmed men and women alike with his charisma and his parting phrase, “Have a great life.” GG Pa regaled us with stories of his childhood and life experiences and of the first time he laid eyes on his sweetheart and future bride, as well as his many thrilling war stories. He was never one to back down from a challenge and taught his family the meaning of hard work and the joy of earning the fruits of your own labor. He charmed and left an imprint on everyone he met. He will be missed by many. For sure he already is now the handyman in Heaven.

Visitation was at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck June 16 and 17. The funeral Mass was celebrated June 18 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck by the Rev. Fr. Philip J. Pizzo. Interment, with U.S. Army honors, was at Calverton National Cemetery.
