Charles B. Gardner Jr.

Charles B. Gardner Jr. of Mattituck died Thursday, June 21, 2012, at the age of 88.

He was born in New York City on January 25, 1924, to Charles B. Gardner Sr. and Elizabeth Anne Gardner. From 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945, he served in the United States Army. Then in 1946, he married Mildred Abouaf at St. Luke’s Church in the Bronx.

Mr. Gardner retired as a Battalion Chief with the FDNY after 30 years of service and was a member of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association. For the past 30 years, he has lived in Mattituck and was a communicant of Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred; three children, Sherryl Gardner Thompson of Sarasota, Fla., Christine Gardner Raftery of Floral Park and C. Richard Gardner of Garden City; three sisters, Winifred Drankwater and Betty Anne Ferrelle, both of Washington, D.C., and Marguerite McCormick of New York City; five grandchildren, Kevin Gardner Thompson of Sarasota, Fla., Meagen Elizabeth Raftery of Commack, N.Y., Christopher James Gardner of Washington, D.C., and Carolyn Gardner and Gregory Gardner, both of Garden City; and two great-grandsons, Ryan Charles Fenn and “Baby Boy” Fenn.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, June 23, at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church by Father George Michell. Interment was at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck.
