Jean Olsson Hogan

Jean Olsson Hogan, age 81, passed away on June 3 at her home in Wallingford, Pa., where she had lived for the past three years with her husband, Bob.

Jean was born and raised in Rockaway, N.Y., graduated from Pratt Institute in 1953 and lived most of her life in Lynbrook, N.Y., where she was the ultimate stay-at-home mom. With a Bachelor of Science in home economics, she was well prepared to sew many of the children’s clothes, have home-baked cookies ready for after-school snacks, lead the 4-H clubs, fix electrical appliances and provide business support for Bob’s artwork. Her family referred to her as “the original Martha Stewart.” She and Bob moved to Swarthmore in 2005 to be closer to family and participate in the active Wallingford-Swarthmore community.

Jean was involved in community activities in Lynbrook and also in East Marion and Greenport, where she and Bob had spent summers since 1984. A real beach lover, Jean enjoyed teaching her six granddaughters the joys of collecting shells and sea glass in East Marion. She also taught them where to pick strawberries, raspberries and peaches and what to do with them in the kitchen. Always optimistic, outgoing and spunky, she made new friends in Pennsylvania during her later years and was always happy to dance or laugh with family and friends.

She is survived by Robert F. Hogan, her husband of 57 years; daughters, Nancy Hogan Oetinger (Jim Oetinger) and Leelee Hogan (Richard Preis); son, Richard Robert Hogan (Carron Sherry); and granddaughters, Claire and Julie Oetinger and Lily, Annika, Eloise and Violette Sherry Hogan.

A memorial service will be held Friday, June 29, at 11 a.m. at Orient Congregational Church (for directions see orientcong.org). Friends and family are welcome to join us at a picnic to follow the service at our family home on Shelter Island.

Memorial donations may be made to Orient Congregational Church, P.O. Box 425, Orient NY 11957.

This is a paid notice.
