Joyce Zevits of Southold died June 12 at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport. She was 53.
She was born May 30, 1959, in Englewood, N.J., to Elizabeth (Wickersheim) and Joseph Zevits.
She was a former police officer and, in 1978, became the first female officer appointed in Fort Lee, N.J. She later became a nurse.
Family members said she loved the outdoors, boating and animals. Her quick wit and laughter will be missed, they said.
Ms. Zevits is survived by her brothers, Joseph, Michael and Robert; her sister, Patricia Kelly; and her devoted companion, Peter Jacques.
Graveside services were held June 16 at St. Patrick R.C. Cemetery in Southold, Father Kenneth Hand officiating. Arrangements were handled by DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.
