Planning Board Notes: Where to put the manure?

Now here’s an item you don’t often see on the agenda.

The new owners of the G.W. Meade horse farm on Ackerly Pond Road in Southold presented their manure disposal plan to the board Monday afternoon.

Brian Glenn and Lucille Sullivan, who recently purchased the horse farm and plan to build a riding academy, said they’d like to put a manure disposal containment area at the end of a proposed new driveway. They offered to build the driveway after neighbors complained that they didn’t want the horse farm to use the original right of way shared with several neighbors’ driveways.

Mr. Glenn said he and Ms. Sullivan had just finished cleaning manure off their property, which was in disrepair under its previous owner, and had just gotten rid of the last flies in their house.

“This is probably the best location for it,” Mr. Glenn said of the disposal area, noting that it would be cleaned out on a nearly daily basis. “Our intention is to keep the horses away from it. It’s safety for our staff, us and our kids. We don’t want our horses getting worms.

“Fire engines can get around it. It’s fully enclosed and blocked off with bushes and fencing,” Mr. Glenn added. “We’re trying to really be good neighbors here. This is one of the best things we can do to get rid of manure. We live there. We don’t want it on our property either. We’re going to be as diligent as we can be about it.”

The project received Zoning Board approval late last year and is in the final stages of review by the Planning Board.

MILL CREEK QUESTIONS

Members of the Planning Board also reviewed a proposal for a dockmaster’s shed at the former Mill Creek Inn property on Route 25 in Southold.

Town planners said they’d heard anecdotal reports that the shed would contain bathrooms and showers, but the plan contained no details about whether cesspools were being built for the building.

They also said they’d like to clarify whether there will be an on-site waste pump-out station.
