Put on your walking shoes for tonight’s Greenport Walk
Downtown business owners will light-up their storefronts with round, green-glowing lanterns tonight for the first Greenport Walk of the season.
About 70 stores will participate in the event, formerly known as the Greenport Gallery Walk, and will stay open late, offer sales and hold raffles from 6 to 9 p.m. on the third Saturday of every month through September.
Greenport resident and event organizer Joyce deCordova, whose husband, Hector, runs deCordova Studio located on Main Street, said the event has opened up to all local shops this year because many downtown galleries have closed since the seasonal occasion started six years ago.
“It was fine at the beginning; there was a lot of action and a lot of people coming into town,” she said. “But out of 10 galleries, five have since closed.”
Ms. deCordova said she believes the Greenport Walk will help promote local businesses.
In addition to a stroll downtown amongst glowing lanterns, there will be entertainment, too. North Fork musician Liza Coppola will be performing in front of the new oil and vinegar tasting room, Vines and Branches, located on Main Street. Duo music group Second Hands will be performing in front of the Little Red Schoolhouse on Front Street.
Ms. deCordova said she’s in the process of working with Greenport students to have them act as mimes for future events.
The first Greenport Walk takes place tonight. Subsequent dates are set for July 21, Aug. 18 and Sept. 15. A list of participating stores can be found on the Greenport Business Improvement District’s website.
