Mason O. Wells

Former Southold resident Mason O. Wells of Oceanside, Calif., died at his home on July 19, 2012. He was 81 years young.

He was born Nov. 14, 1929, in Grand Island, Neb., and was raised by his grandparents, Ada and Dr. John M. Wells of Skunk Lane, Cutchogue. Mason met and married his wife, the former Geraldine Smith of Greenport, L.I., in 1950.

He played on the Greenport Rams semi-pro football team and worked on the Edward J. McKeever Jr. bunker boat as a pilot. He was captain of Packard Hose Co. of the Southold Fire Department and captain of their racing team. He retired from his profession of construction superintendent in San Diego in 1982.

He was very proud of his heritage. His family were direct descendents of the First Settlers of Cutchogue, L.I.

He is survived by his daughters, Karen, of Southold, and Conni, of Oceanside; his sons, David and Bradley, both of Oceanside; grandsons Jacob and Jeremy Bullock and David A. and Daniel Wells and granddaughter Sienna Wells; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Southold Fire Department in Southold, N.Y., and North Coast Hospice in Carlsbad, Calif.
