A man was hospitalized after he crashed into a speed limit sign and mailbox in Mattituck Friday evening, fire officials at the scene said.

The driver of a gold Chrysler 300 crashed while traveling eastbound on Westphalia Avenue, just east of the intersection of Bennett’s Pond Lane at about 8:15 p.m.

The driver, who was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center by the department’s rescue squad, was not seriously injured in the crash, according to Mattituck fire chief Jason Haas.

“He said he doesn’t really know what happened,” Chief Haas said of the driver. There were no other passengers in the vehicle.
