The former Bitner estate, a 57-acre property preserved in 2008, has become a joint Suffolk County and Southold Town park.

The park, now known as Sound View Dunes, is on Soundview Avenue in Peconic, just a half-mile east of Goldsmith Inlet County Park. It opened to the public this week.

The park includes an upland trail and a beach and dunes trail.

“Sound View Dunes Park is truly one of the North Fork’s natural treasures,” Supervisor Scott Russell said this week in a press release announcing the opening. “We are pleased to announce that the trails are officially open to the public so that everyone can enjoy the beauty of this land.”

“Thanks to the Bittner family for their strong commitment to preservation, enabling their land to be protected in perpetuity and enjoyed by all,” added Melissa Spiro, the town’s land preservation coordinator. “The Southold Town Community Preservation Fund has been critical in being able to protect open space and farmland within the town.”
