Carol A. Berdinka

Carol A. Berdinka, a longtime resident of New Suffolk, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead after a brave fight against pancreatic cancer. She was 74.

She was born Dec. 30, 1937, in Jersey City, N.J., to Joseph and Anne (Malinowski) Polashock. The family moved to New Suffolk when she was 10. She attended New Suffolk School and later graduated from Southold High School.

She moved to San Jose, Calif., where she worked as an educator for special needs children for 23 years. After moving back to New Suffolk in 1990, she worked as an instructional aide at New Suffolk School until retiring.

She was an avid crafter, enjoying crocheting, knitting, counted cross-stitch and sewing, to name a few, and belonged to the Jamesport Homemakers. She enjoyed gardening as well.

She was a proud, beloved mother, dear sister and most treasured grandma.

Predeceased by her husband, Louis J. Berdinka, in 2002, Ms. Berdinka is survived by her children, Carol (Jason) Leonard of Southold, Kathy (Tony) Ramsey of New Sharon, Maine, James Berdinka of San Jose, Calif., and Patricia (David) Silva of San Jose, Calif.; her brother, Joseph (Ellie) Polashock of New Suffolk; and her grandchildren: Anastasia (Joseph) Loper of Mattituck; Sara, Joseph, Alexis and Wyatt Leonard, all of Southold; Jason, Welly, Emily and Julia Ramsey, all of New Sharon, Maine; and Jennifer, Carly and David Silva, all of San Jose, Calif.

The family received visitors at a celebration of her life on Thursday, Aug. 16, at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. Cremation was private.
