Update: 82-year-old driver lost consciousness in Southold crash

GIANNA VOLPE PHOTO |  A Mazda Miata struck a gray Acura after the Miata’s driver apparently lost consciousness.

An 82-year-old driver of a red convertible who crashed into a parked car near the North Road in Southold Friday lost consciousness before veering into the median and back across east bound lane of traffic, according to a witness driving behind the man, Southold Police said.

The Mazda Miata was headed westbound on Route 48 when it crossed the median just before 9 a.m. and traveled about 100 feet before striking a gray Acura near the stop sign at the intersection with Old North Road, said Fire Chief Bill Byrnes. The Acura carried a for sale sign.

“He either fell asleep or something happened because that’s a long way to travel and there’s no sign he used his breaks,” the chief said.

The driver, Phillip Didreksen of Nantucket, Mass., was taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital. His condition was not immediately known.
