VIDEO: Sneak peek at SoundWaters sailing tours in Greenport this weekend

There’s an 80-foot replica of a Chesapeake Bay sharpie schooner in Greenport this weekend and its ready for children to learn about water quality and for adults to enjoy dinner and drinks while watching a sunset.

SoundWaters, whose home port is in Stamford, Conn., is holding “Public Engagement Sails” in selected ports of Long Island Sound with the goal of raising awareness about the dangers of water pollution, as well as teaching passengers about how they can help protect aquatic life and improve water quality.

During the two-hour tour, passengers will also have an opportunity to help raise the sails and haul the nets.

The educational component to the “Afternoon Educational Sails” involves participating in the program’s learning stations that highlight how human activities and debris can affect the health of local bodies of waters. Passengers can also conduct experiments and analyze groundwater filtration. There’s a touch-tank featuring live animals, too.

Later in the day, SoundWaters offers a “Sunset Sails” tour where adults can bring dinner and beverages aboard the ship.

The educational sails will take place Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Tickets cost $25. The sunset sails are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $35. Children must be at least 6 years old. Walk-ons welcome. To reserve tickets, call (203) 406-3335 or visit soundwaters.org.
