Doris P. Foster

Doris P. Foster of Cutchogue passed away at Peconic Bay Medical Center on Thursday, August 9, after a brief illness. She was 91.

Born Doris Elizabeth Price, the eldest child of Harold D. Price and Vera Petty Price, she attended East Cutchogue School, Southold High School and New Paltz State Teachers College. She held a bachelor’s degree in education.

Education was her calling. She taught fourth grade at the Southold School for a number of years, using games to spark student interest and hone core competencies. When Southold first adopted a “new math” curriculum she took evening classes to learn that approach and became a middle-school math teacher. Teaching an evening class for parents so they could help their children with math homework was one of her proudest memories. She retired when she was 55 but continued to tutor students in math for the next 30 years.

Her hobbies included basketball during her youth, horseback riding for many years, travel and square dancing. She loved attending the annual New York State Math Teachers Association conference. After advanced age restricted these activities she continued to enjoy television coverage of basketball, baseball and golf. She was a member of Cutchogue Methodist Church.

She married her high school sweetheart, Herman F. Moeller, while he was serving in the Navy. They had two children, Linda Lee and Richard Frederick. Her first husband died in 1966 and, in 1972, she married Donald Foster, a widower with three children, Donald, Mary and Jeffrey.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda; her son-in-law, David; her stepson, Jeff; her sister, Janet Case; her brothers-in-law Ernest W. Case and Bob Moeller; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours and a brief service took place Aug. 13 at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Cutchogue New Suffolk Free Library, P.O. Box 935, 27550 Main Road, Cutchogue, NY 11935 (631-734-6360) or Community Action Southold Town (CAST), P.O. Box 159, 311 Front St., Greenport, NY 11944 (631-477-1717).
