A delectable smell permeated the entire downtown area of Cutchogue Saturday afternoon as the Cutchogue Fire Department held its 56th annual chicken barbecue.

According to John Lademann, who celebrates his 50th anniversary as a member of the pit committee this year, an estimated 4,000 pounds of charcoal was used to cook over 3,000 chicken dinners.

Hundreds of volunteers wearing red shirts were hard at work cooking, serving, restocking, cleaning and seating the constant stream of people arriving for dinner.
