Think you do the best BBQ on the North Fork? Prove it
Cody’s BBQ & Grill is hosting its first-ever BBQ Cook-Off and Country Western Concert this Saturday afternoon.
They have tapped grand champion pit-master Konrad Haskins of Austin, Texas to oversee the barbecue competition and be a judge along with members of the Riverhead Town Board. Mr. Haskins is the only full-time barbecue cooking teacher in Texas and founder of the bbqinstitue.com. He was first brought in a year ago to help Cody’s with their menu, rubs, sauces and proper use of the wood smoker — they use peach and hickory.
Mr. Haskins said it will essentially be a “backyard contest” and the judges will be looking for well-cooked meat that looks nice. The garnish is optional and they’ll allow only lettuce and parsley.
The two categories are chicken and baby back pork ribs or spareribs. Meat inspection will be at 9 a.m. and cooking begins at 10 a.m. The chicken will be judged at 1 p.m. and ribs at 2 p.m.
Grand champion will win a Char-Griller, a duo gas and charcoal grill, plus $100 and a trophy. The reserve champion receives a Weber Charcoal Grill plus $50 and a trophy. The prizes are courtesy of Lowe’s and Griffing Hardware.
After the judging, a concert and hoedown will begin on the Peconic Riverfront with the bands Rattlesnake Dawn, Yankee Rebel and Southbound all performing.
