Police: Man stabbed in Greenport, drives himself to hospital

A injured man drove himself to the hospital after was stabbed by an unknown person in Greenport early Sunday morning, Southold Town police said.

The 23-year-old Hispanic man, who was not identified by police, was stabbed once in the abdomen at the corner of Washington Avenue and Middleton Road about 4 a.m., according to police.

The victim drove himself to Eastern Long Island Hospital where he is being treated, police said. An update on the victim’s condition was not available Sunday afternoon.

A police officer at the scene Sunday declined to comment because of the ongoing investigation.

Homeowners near the scene said they didn’t see what happened the night before, though some reported hearing a commotion outside.

One resident, who said his name was Ricardo, said his wife was woken up by the sounds of a group of people walking up and down the street about 3 a.m. He said she then heard someone yelp and a car drive away.

Ricardo said he saw police investigating in the morning, but hadn’t heard what had happened.

Another neighbor, Janet Staples, said she saw police surveying the scene about 10 a.m.

She was shocked to hear that a stabbing had occurred, saying the neighborhood is generally safe.

“I had no idea,” Ms. Staples said. “That’s surprising.”
