Disturbing finds during Greenport beach cleanup

Three Greenport youths who stepped up to remove trash from the Sound beach at the end of their road Saturday found more than the average plastic trash.

Casper and Digby Loveless joined friend Jacob Mazzefaro in collecting 15 shopping bags full of trash during their part of the International Clean Up the Shoreline Day at the 67 Steps beach, said Jaren Loveless, the two brothers’ father.

“I was amazed at how many bottle caps litter the shore,” Mr. Loveless said. “It makes me think that there should be a separate recycling fee for caps and bottles.”

Among the many dozens of cigarette lighters and beer cans, the boys also came across two drug syringes.

“That was more disappointing than just finding the more mundane bits of plastic,” said Mr. Loveless. “But it did offer a chance at having a conversation about the dangers in life.”
