Blotter: OnStar car thief also stole engagement ring, wedding band

A Cutchogue woman was arrested for stealing a car Saturday night, Sept. 8, after police located the vehicle through its OnStar service, according to a report.

Police said the car was found outside the home of Carrie McCabe, 38. She is also a suspect in the burglary of the car owners’ residence and was found in possession of a gold wedding band and engagement ring, valued at a combined $12,000, belonging to the victims, according to police.

Ms. McCabe is an acquaintance of the victims, said police, who have described the incident as both alcohol- and drug-related. At the time of her arrest, they reported, she appeared intoxicated and her speech was slurred. She was charged with grand larceny, burglary and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, police said.

Ms. McCabe was previously arrested for DWI in May, according to a police press release.

• The investigation is ongoing in the grand larceny case concerning two rings reported missing by a Laurel woman on Sept. 2, police said. The victim said she suspects a family member. The rings, a white diamond engagement ring valued at $3,500 and another with a heart shape valued at $1,500, were found missing at 8 p.m.

• Detectives are also investigating the theft of $1,246 worth of leaded copper sheets, stolen from a barn in Cutchogue between Aug. 27 and Sept. 3, police said.

• With help from other responders, the Southold Fire Department extinguished a boat fire in Southold Bay at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 10,
police said.

An overheating engine reportedly caused the vessel, owned by a Southold resident, to catch fire before Southold bay constables, Seatow and Southold Fire Department arrived to extinguish the blaze and escort the occupants to shore, police said.

All refused medical attention, according to the report.

• Detectives are investigating the theft of several items from a Peconic Landing resident’s apartment sometime between Aug. 11 and Sept. 5, police said. A Pennsylvania woman reported that two brass candlesticks valued at $2,200, a Timex watch valued at $50, a bracelet valued at $100 and a $25 box of packing paper were removed from her mother’s apartment. The victim said her mother’s apartment had been vacant at the time. There were no signs of forced entry.

• A Mattituck man reported the theft of $700 cash from an open safe on his bedroom dresser sometime between Sept. 2 and 3.

• A Southold man reported the theft of $300 in cash and a pack of cigarettes from his vehicle parked in his driveway on the night of Sept. 7, police said.

• An investigation is ongoing into the Sept. 8 theft of a Laurel woman’s iPad and black leather case, valued at $150, from her locked vehicle while it was parked at either a church or convenience store in Mattituck, police said. The woman said her driver’s side window was partially open, but did not appear to be open enough to allow a hand to reach inside.

• A Greenport woman reported the theft of a powder blue bike with white tires, valued at $100, from her shed between Sept. 1 and 3, police said.

• Three Mitt Romney political signs went missing last week, according to police, two from a front yard on Sound Avenue in Mattituck on Sept. 6 and the third from a front yard on Route 48 in Greenport on Sept. 8. The Greenport woman alleged this is the third time her sign has been stolen, according to reports.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
