Passing boater rescues capsized kayaker in Peconic Bay

A passing boater rescued a Greenport man from the bay Monday night after he fell out of his kayak northwest of Robins Island, police said.

The kayaker, Cody Clifford, had managed to fish his cell phone out of his kayak and call police for help just before 7 p.m., but could not get back into his boat. While waiting for help, he was picked up by Alan Dinizio, owner of Dinizio Service Center in Mattituck, according to Southold Police Capt. Frank Kruszewski.

The Cutchogue Fire Department responded to the New Suffolk boat ramp and transported Mr. Clifford, who was reported to be conscious and alert, to Eastern Long Island Hospital to be checked out.
