Herbert Alfred Fisher Sr.

Herbert Alfred Fisher Sr. of Mattituck died at the Riverhead Care Center on Sept. 26, 2012. He was 82 years old.

Mr. Fisher was born in Greenport, N.Y., to Henry W. and Alice (Smith) Fisher. After graduating from Southold High School, he served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1952, receiving the Good Conduct Medal.

On Jan. 17, 1959, he married Margaret vanRyswyk in Mattituck and together they made their home there for all these years. For 40 years, he enjoyed a career with New York Telephone Company as a test technician.

Herb was a member of the Mattituck Fire Department for over 50 years, a former member of the Southold Fire Department and a very active member of the Peconic Lodge No. 349 of the Free and Accepted Masons and several other Masonic-affiliated organizations. He was also a member of the Communications Workers of America and Mattituck Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret; his three children, Herbert A. Fisher Jr. and Jerina Fisher, both of Mattituck, and Susan Tyler of Cutchogue; and three grandchildren, Zachary, Justin and Abby Tyler. He was predeceased by his siblings, Shirley, George, Flora and Ellsworth.

The family received friends Oct. 1 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where the Mattituck Fire Department and the Masons conducted fraternal services. Funeral services were held Oct. 2 at Mattituck Presbyterian Church by the Rev. George Gaffga. Interment, with U.S. Navy honors, was in the Fisher plot at Southold Presbyterian Cemetery.
