Southold school roof referendum passes

A referendum on spending $2.5 million from the Southold School District’s capital reserve to repair the secondary school roof and update its cafeteria passed in lopsided vote Tuesday night.

The measure won by a vote of 317 to 43, or a margin of 88 percent yes to 12 percent no. The expenditure required two separate referenda in two separate school years. The first vote, which passed with the school budget vote last May, was to move the funds from the district’s repair budget to its capital budget. Tuesday’s vote was to spend the money.

The district expects to complete the roof work next summer and use some of the money to spruce up the cafeteria and make changes to administrative office locations.
