William D. George

Greenport resident William D. George died Oct. 15 at The Shores at Peconic Landing. He was 90.

Born Nov. 22, 1921, in Newport News, Va., to Charles and Grace (Bowman) George, he later moved with his family to Portsmouth, Va., where he attended school. He graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

During World War II, he was stationed with the 20th Air Force in Guam, flying 25 missions over Japan. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal for action in the Pacific.

Mr. George worked for the Government Defense Contracts Administrator Service to Management Division before retiring in 1988. Family members said he was a master mason.

Predeceased by his wife, Beverly Walsh George, in 2010, he is survived by his sister, Grace Jenkins of Fairfax, Va.

A memorial service was held Oct. 20 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greenport. Interment was at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, N.Y. Arrangements were handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.
