Featured Letter: Fleeing the GOP in Southold Town, CD1

To the Editor:

The Board of Election’s September report on new registered voters in the Town of Southold lists 72 Democrats, 21 Republicans and no new Conservatives. This is noteworthy considering Southold was traditionally a Republican town.

In the 1st Congressional District the numbers are 1,579 Democrats, 857 Republicans and 677 Conservatives. This is noteworthy since the eastern Suffolk district was traditionally Republican.

Democratic registration exceeded Republican in nine of Suffolk’s 10 towns, Smithtown being the exception. This noteworthy since Suffolk County at one time was a Republican stronghold.

Clearly the extremist highjacking of the Republican Party and its platform is not resonating with our electorate.

Art Tillman, Mattituck

chairman, Southold Democratic Party
