Lloyd Clifford Kalin

Lloyd Clifford Kalin of Orient, known as “Pep,” died Sept. 28 at home. He was 81.

He was born Sept. 14, 1931, in Greenport to Marguerite (Brown) and Lewis John Kalin. He attended The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine in New York, where he sang in the boys’ choir, and graduated from Greenport High School. He married Joan Marie Karcher in Orient on Dec. 30, 1950, and served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 and during the Korean War, attaining the rank of corporal.

He worked at Kalin’s Florist in Greenport for over 20 years and later in the Village of Greenport utilities department as a water plant operator for 23 years. He sang in the Whalers Chorus barbershop group in Southampton for 41 years and participated in an international competition in Cincinnati, Ohio, in which the Whalers placed fifth.

Mr. Kalin was a member of the Orient Fire Department, Orient Congregational Church and the Rock Hill Hunting Club in Glen Spey, N.Y. He enjoyed hunting, clamming and playing poker.

Predeceased by his wife, he is survived by his son, Lloyd (Sandi), and his daughter, Nancy, both of New York; his sisters, Marjorie Nugent of Greenport and Barbara Ostroski of Virginia Beach, Va.; his brother Donald, of Florida; his grandchildren, Tina, Tommy, Andy, Cassandra and Jennifer; and his great-grandchildren, Owen, Jasmine, Alicia and one he called “still in the oven, not quite ready.” He was also predeceased by his brothers Herb and Bob and his grandson Lloyd A. Kalin Jr.

Visiting hours and a firematic service took place Oct. 1 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A service was held Oct. 2 at Orient Congregational Church, followed by interment at Orient Central Cemetery.
