The sun broke through the clouds just in time for the start of the inaugural Alex S. Mele Softball Tournament held at the Polo Grounds in Greenport on Sunday.

Organized by  Cutchogue residents Danielle Fogarty and Courtney Meringer, the first annual tournament was held in memory of Alex Mele, a Longwood High School ballplayer who died of acute myelogenous leukemia in August 2010, just short of his 17th birthday.

Players from across Long Island competed throughout the day and there were raffles and food sales to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
