Tree stump removal leads to gas leak in Mattituck

The removal of a tree trunk stump from a front yard in Mattituck led to a gas leak Thursday afternoon, officials on the scene said.

At about 5:10 p.m. officials said they were called to an Old Sound Avenue gas leak after a resident accidentally hit a gas line while removing the stump using a backhoe.

The Mattituck Fire Department responded and volunteer firefighter John Delaney, who also works for National Grid, was able to turn off the gas using the curbside valve, said Mattituck Fire Chief Jason Haas.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
