John Galt Fisher

John G. Fisher, known as Jack, died Nov. 17 at Peconic Landing in Greenport, N.Y. He was 90 years old.

Born May 14, 1922, to Grace (Hatfield) and George Franklin Fisher, he graduated from Scarsdale High School in 1941 and attended North Carolina State University.

During World War II he served in the Coast Guard Picket Patrol and became part of the “Hooligan Navy” that conducted antisubmarine patrols in the North Atlantic in wooden sailboats. He was recently honored as Grand Marshal during the Greenport Maritime Festival.

He married Frances Ridley Williams on June 3, 1950. They settled in Closter, N.J. Frances predeceased Jack in 1983.

Jack was president and owner of Fisher Oldsmobile in Bergenfield, N.J., until 1988. In May 1991 he married Betty Martens Kunkel. He summered every year of his life in New Suffolk, N.Y., and moved there permanently upon retirement in 1988. He loved sailing, boating and everything about the North Fork of Long Island, especially the Wednesday night races around Robins Island. Jack and Betty have resided at Peconic Landing since 2002.

His memberships included president of the Bergen County Auto Association, Knickerbocker Country Club, board of directors of Fellowship Savings and Loan, Rotary clubs of Bergenfield and Southold, New Suffolk Civic Association, Old Cove Yacht Club, Peconic Bay Sailing Association, North Fork Country Club and Southold Presbyterian Church.
Jack was predeceased by his brothers, George and Robert Fisher, and is survived by three children, Nancy Endemann of Cutchogue, Sandra Gannon of Cutchogue and Jay Fisher of Dumont, N.J. He leaves six grandchildren and two great-grandsons. Also surviving are two stepsons, Louis Kunkel and Henry Kunkel, and seven step-grandchildren.

There will be memorial visiting hours at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue Saturday, Nov. 24, from 3 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, at First Presbyterian Church of Southold, with a reception immediately following at the North Fork Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Eastern Long Island Hospital.
