Marilyn Payne Norkelun
Marilyn Payne Norkelun passed away Oct. 29, 2012, at Stony Brook University Medical Center after a brief but intense recurrence of cancer. She was 83 years old.
She was born July 19, 1929, in Pompton Lakes, N.J., to Evelyn and William Payne. As a teenager, she spent her summers in Southold at her grandmother’s beach home. She met and married William Norkelun Jr. in 1949 and became a local resident. They raised their five children while residing in Greenport and, later, Orient.
She worked as a waitress for many years at Claudio’s Restaurant in Greenport and later became a respected realtor in Orient while working for King Realty. When she retired, she moved back to Greenport. She loved a good game of golf and served on the board of Island’s End Golf Club. Marilyn was an avid bird watcher and a savvy bridge player and was unbeatable at both Scrabble and crossword puzzles. She cherished her wide circle of friends.
She is survived by her daughters, Karen Long of Fallbrook, Calif., Kyle Buschatzke of San Diego, Calif., and Jill Laughlin of Oceanside, Calif.; her sons, Kim Norkelun of Mattituck, N.Y., and William James Norkelun of Oceanside, Calif.; and her sisters Joette Aisenstat of Saratoga, N.Y., and Janice Van Hise of Newton, N.J. She also leaves behind three wonderful granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her parents; her sister Edith Savacool; and her granddaughter Hilary Norkelun.
She will be greatly missed by her family and dear friends. Arrangements are being handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. We will respect her wish for no service. We ask instead that you do something for someone in need to honor her memory.
