Bego-Ezair Hotel owner falls to death in Manhattan
The co-owner of the Bego-Ezair Hotel on Main Street in Greenport died Saturday morning after falling five stories from the roof of a business she owned in Manhattan, according to The New York Post.
Marijana Bego, 54, was found lying in the middle of Madison Avenue after plunging from the roof of the building that houses one of the three galleries she co-owns, according to the Post.
After being found around 6:20 a.m., Ms. Bego was rushed to Lenox Hill Hospital, where the native of Switzerland was pronounced dead, according to the Post report. Police told reporters they believed it was a suicide leap, though they say she left no note behind.
The Bego-Ezair Hotel Gallery in Greenport, an art gallery and nine-room bed and breakfast, first opened in 2010 after years of construction glitches and problems meeting requirements imposed by Greenport’s Planning Board and Historic Preservation Commission.
Ms. Bego told The Suffolk Times she hoped the hotel, which she co-owned with business partner Khedouri Ezair, would be a mecca for creative people — artists, writers and others — who want to come to Greenport.
“I want them to remember Greenport and spend a pleasant few nights,” she said.
Ms. Bego also owned a gallery in Southampton, according to her website.
