Candlelight vigil in Southold tonight for Newtown victims

JENNIFER GUSTAVSON PHOTO | The Giving Room in Southold is holding a candlelight vigil on Wednesday night to reflect on last week’s school shooting tragedy.

The Giving Room yoga studio in Southold has scheduled a public candlelight vigil for tonight in memory of the victims of last week’s school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Paula DiDonato, who owns the studio, said she decided to organize the event after talking with Greenport artist Terrence Joyce about wanting to provide an outlet for grieving people. Mr. Joyce will lead a guided meditation during the vigil, she said.

“The intent is to light a candle in memory of and direct healing energy to the people that lost loved ones,” Ms. DiDonato said. “All positive emotions you want to feel personally you can extend to others.”

Mr. Joyce said the event will help people deal with tension and their emotions evoked by last week’s tragedy.

“We’re trying to bring good feelings where all the hurt has been in the past few days,” he said. “Bad feelings are appropriate sometimes, but you don’t want to hold on to them.”

The candlelight vigil is from 8 to 9 p.m. at The Giving Room located on Main Road in Southold.
