Edward R. Connaughton

Edward R. Connaughton of Southold died Dec. 2. He was 90 years old.

He was born July 29, 1922, in Little Neck, N.Y., to James and Marcella (Houy) Connaughton. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 7th Reconnaissance Group of the 8th Air Force in England, where he was chief of a section of 10 draftsmen who prepared aerial maps, plotted aerial photographic missions and made photographic mosaics. He earned the Distinguished Unit Badge, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged in 1945.

While living in Little Neck, Mr. Connaughton was an emergency medical technician and a member of the Little Neck Douglaston Ambulance Squad and District 4 of the New York State Volunteer Ambulance and First Aid Association. He also worked for many years as an executive with Equitable Life Insurance Company.

In the 1970s, he moved to Southold, where he was a communicant of St. Patrick R.C. Church and a Eucharistic minister.

Family members said he enjoyed winemaking and painting decoys.

Predeceased by his wife, Florence, in 2003, Mr. Connaughton is survived by nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick R.C. Church, followed by interment, with U.S. Army honors, at the church cemetery.
