Stella Manos

Longtime Southold resident Stella Manos died Dec. 31 at her home. She was 85.

She was born Oct. 16, 1927, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Peter and Pagoni (Politis) Arvanitas. She graduated with a B.F.A. in music and a B.A. in education from Carnegie Mellon University. She married James Manos in Brooklyn on Sept. 12, 1954. For 20 years, she was a New York City Board of Education music teacher. She had lived in Southold since 1973.

Ms. Manos was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota sorority. Family members said her hobbies included bridge, gardening and playing both modern and classical piano pieces.

In addition to her husband, Ms. Mano is survived by her sons, Peter, of Atlanta, Ga., and Charles, of Huntington; siblings Patricia Thatcher, Arthur Arvanitas and Michael Arvanitas, all of Utah, and Theodora Wise of Boston, Mass.; and three grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother James Arvanitas.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, Jan. 3, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at Sts. Anargyroi and Taxiarhis Greek Orthodox Church in Greenport, with Father Jerasimos Ballas officiating. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
